What’s with the name?

“What is jera?”

We receive the question many times throughout the year at shows and wanted to let you all know where this came from. I have always had a strong interest in history and anybody who knows me will be able to quickly tell you how quickly I can start to pour out all of the information I have read throughout my life. Part of my interests in the past has been about old Scandinavian culture. Part of my family also has a very strong Norwegian heritage. “jera” is one of the elder futhark Norse runes and has had many meanings throughout the years.

One of the bigger meanings to the rune is for harvest and getting something out of the work that is put into it. I have a very strong satisfaction with completing tasks and getting a finished product out and learning that new school. This all falls very much into the meaning the jera rune.

The rune is also strongly associated with yearly cycles and anybody in the craft business surely knows about the cycles of shows throughout the year and the different items/feels/vibes/attendees that go along with those cycles.

Finally it is also associated with the earth. Not only am I an earthly and grounded type of person but this is also where my materials come from.

All of these meanings (along with a few months of indecision) added into my choosing this to be part of my business name to embody those principals. You will also note that my works have a touchmark imprinted on them with the jera rune because I am proud of each of the pieces that I make and send off into the world.

Hopefully this helps to clarify one of these FAQs (maybe I should make a page for that). Thank you and have a great day!
